PURPOSE

Nurse practitioners (NPs), physician assistants (PAs), and supervising physicians’ benefit from an increased awareness and understanding of lessons learned from closed malpractice claims. Attend this session to learn about what the claims data shows as the most frequent type of claim, risk issue, and severity of loss for supervising physician and advanced practice providers. California has modified regulatory laws regarding PA and NP supervision. This session will review the changes and implementation dates. Health care providers must interact with staff and patients of different cultural, spiritual, political, and moral views. It is important to recognize the impact of an individual's culture on their health care experience. There are occasions when a patient encounter can push your tolerance and sensitivity to the limit. In addition, challenging pandemic times have caused patients to become more demanding in their expectations.

OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this program, you will be able to:

• Recognize the most frequent risks that could result in a malpractice claim for the NP, PA, and supervising physician
• Implement three strategies to decrease my liability as a NP, PA, or supervising physician
• Discuss the California Scope of Practice requirements for NPs and PAs
• Understand the importance of communicating effectively with patients and the health care team, across patient cultures and identities (including racial, ethnic, religious, and gender)
